In the whirlwind of modern life, it’s all too easy to lose sight of what truly matters: our well-being and our connections with others. As someone deeply immersed in the realm of holistic health, I’ve come to realize the critical importance of finding harmony between our commitments to others and our own self-care. Sometimes you have to put the oxygen mask on yourself first (like the airlines announcements prior to take-off) so you can adequately care for those around you.
I spent the first 28+ years running my company as an extrovert, social functions, reaching out to others constantly to check in, always “on”, if the atmosphere needed a lift, I would do the lifting. I was in a constant state of “overwhelm”, but that’s how the game is played? That’s how you get ahead, by helping others and sacrificing or being completely oblivious to your own needs? Pro tip – “Feeling overwhelmed at another social obligation? Have another drink, you can physically be present yet be checked out, please note the sarcasm here. That was my M.O. for many years until I hit a wall (more on that in another blog).
In a recent introspective moment, I found myself pondering the delicate balance between what I call ATOFs (All The Other Folks/Things Other Than Family) and my personal health and wellness. I asked myself, “Can I afford to allocate less time to the demands of ATOFs and redirect that energy towards prioritizing my own physical, mental, and spiritual well-being?”
This introspection led me to a profound realization: by making self-care a priority, we not only enhance our own health but also fortify our relationships with loved ones. As we elevate our self-care practices, we inadvertently nurture deeper and more meaningful connections with those closest to us.
So, how can we strike this delicate balance? It begins with a conscious effort to reassess our daily routines and identify areas where we can dial back on non-essential commitments. Whether it’s carving out dedicated time for physical exercise, engaging in mindfulness practices, or simply allowing ourselves moments of rest and rejuvenation, each step towards self-care is a step towards achieving equilibrium. By prioritizing our health and relationships, we create a solid foundation upon which we can navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace. As we cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and nurture meaningful connections with others, we unlock the potential for greater fulfillment and happiness in every aspect of our lives.
